Catering for children

Nutrition is important throughout all stages of life but it is especially important that children eat a healthy balanced diet while they are growing. Children need a variety of foods so that they get a wide range of nutrients. What we feed our children during their early life can influence their eating habits and body weight in later life, which is why it is so important to get the message right.

Childhood obesity is a growing concern and it is estimated that a quarter of all children in the UK will be clinically obese by 2050*. It is also estimated that over a third of all food is eaten outside the home in the UK. With this in mind, it is essential to provide nutritionally balanced food for our children when eating out.

Schools now have a big responsibility in making school meals healthier by complying with 'The Food-Based and Nutrient-Based Standards For School Lunches'. School food has gone through a dramatic transformation in recent years and Brakes has supported these changes by providing our customers with informative marketing resources and by developing new products throughout our product range that are aimed at children. Brakes works closely with the School Food Trust to enable school caterers to meet the new standards and provide good food to children.
