Guideline Daily Amounts

Guideline Daily Amounts (GDAs) help consumers understand the nutrition information provided on food labels. GDAs put the nutrition information on a food label into the context of the overall diet by showing how much of each nutrient is needed daily.

GDAs are guidelines for healthy adults and children and state the approximate amount of calories, protein, carbohydrate, sugar, fat, saturated fat, fibre, sodium and salt required each day for a healthy diet. GDAs help consumers make informed dietary choices.

Individuals vary in many ways, such as body size and activity levels; therefore, GDAs can’t be used as rigid targets for individuals. They simply show which nutrients a food contains and what the nutrients represent in the context of a daily intake.
