Our commitments to health &

wellbeing 2010/11

Brakes is one of the leading suppliers of fresh, grocery, frozen, and non-food products to caterers across the UK. There are 7000 staff who make 30,000 deliveries each day. We supply more than 6000 Brakes brand and many other leading manufacturer branded foods including, but not limited to; sauces, soup, fruit, bread, meat, fish, vegetables and desserts. These are delivered to more than 120,000 businesses in education, healthcare, care homes, restaurants, pubs and many other sectors of the catering industry.

Brakes has a great heritage in health and wellbeing with nutrition embedded into all aspects of the company through nutrition information and advice to customers, training for staff, and our long term food strategy.

Highlights over the last year:

  • We made progress towards the 2010 FSA salt targets and this work is now complete for all Brakes brand sausages, bacon, pies, pasties, bread and biscuits. More than 700 products meet the 2012 salt targets, including 80 of the most popular bread products, such as baguettes, sliced loaves and rolls.
  • We introduced 1% fat milk in a 2 litre bottle to offer our customers choice as an alternative to semi-skimmed milk which is 2% fat.
  • We reviewed and reprinted our Healthier Eating advice brochure and over 3000 copies have been given to caterers.
  • We held meetings with both suppliers and customers to move forward on healthier eating.

General progress

Brakes team of qualified dietitians and nutritionists is part of a strong technical team ensuring the Brakes Brand offers customers and consumers high quality nutritious products. Our successful Healthier Choices brand continues to grow and we have been reducing salt in our products since 2001. We maintain a database in which we hold nutrition data for 6000 Brakes brand products enabling us to provide nutrition information to customers.
