Meals & More clubs aim to provide children aged 2-18 and from challenging backgrounds with access to tasty, healthy weekday meals and an enrichment programme outside of school hours. Brakes works with local delivery partners and club supporters to deliver these.
Following a successful pilot scheme we have committed to rolling out 500 clubs across the UK.
The clubs not only offer healthy food and activities to children but also provide parents with some much-needed support, like advice around preparing meals on a budget. We encourage our colleagues, partners and suppliers to get involved and support this as much as they can, including through volunteering opportunities.
Since the global economic crisis in 2008 the UK government has cut funding to support the social issue of child poverty. A combination of changes to benefit policies, the economic climate and rising utility costs in the last five years has led to a substantial increase in children living in poverty.
Not having access to a healthy, balanced diet inhibits children's physical and mental development at school and at home.
Brakes is perfectly placed to launch an initiative to help out communities that particularly need it - with our network of distribution centres, extensive range and both regional and global suppliers, we are determined to make a positive impact.
