Tuesday night's Cateys, held at London’s Grosvenor House hotel, saw Paul Ainsworth win the accolade that every chef wants to walk away with, the Brakes-sponsored Chef Award. Paul Ainsworth was chosen from an impressive shortlist of some of the UK’s leading chefs, all of whom were nominated by their industry peers.

Chips - Market Update

Despite the rest of the market increasing their prices on chips, we are pleased to announce that we will not be increasing our list prices for Brakes own brand chips and fries.

Brakes struck gold at the British Frozen Food Federation’s (BFFF) Annual Product Awards, taking not just one but two glittering prizes for its innovative range.

Both the Brakes Turkey Ballotine and the M&J Seafood Bistro Hand Battered MSC Cod Fillet were awarded Gold status in the annual awards, judged by representatives from the Craft Guild of Chefs.

In the April 2016 Budget the government proposed a new levy on soft drinks containing added sugar. The levy has been introduced with the primary aim of tackling and reducing obesity in the UK.

HOUSTON, Feb. 22, 2016 – Sysco Corporation (NYSE:SYY), North America’s leading foodservice distributor, announced today that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Brakes Group, a leading European foodservice distributor with operations in the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Sweden, Spain, Belgium and Luxembourg. Brakes Group is owned by Bain Capital Private Equity.

Bain Capital, the owners of Brakes Group, and Fresh Direct, are creating a new fresh food company and we are delighted to confirm that M&J Seafood, Pauleys and Wild Harvest will become part of this joint venture. Almost one third of Brakes’ sales currently comes from fresh and chilled food and we wanted an even broader fresh food offer with capability to deliver fresh products six or seven days per week, from dedicated local fresh depots.


Brakes Group has been named as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Fish Supplier of the Year 2014 as part of the organisation’s celebrations for World Oceans Day on 8 June. 

Brakes, the leading foodservice supplier in Scotland, is set to list eleven innovative new Scottish products after an event to support Scottish suppliers and customers was held in partnership with Scotland Food & Drink on 20-21 May in Edinburgh.

Students from this year’s Brakes Student Chef Team Challenge have reason to celebrate, with one having been offered the opportunity to ditch his student card and become a professional chef in the kitchens at Harrods and another team invited to cook in parliament.
