Wholesale Wine FAQs
Yes, wine does expire, but if stored properly it can last years. Oxygenation is the problem - once wine is exposed to oxygen it starts to turn to vinegar. Expired wine will have a sour, vinegar-like smell and taste as a result.
Once you’ve opened the wine, you can prolong the effects of oxygenation by using a cork or wine stopper to limit oxygen exposure, or transferring the wine to a smaller container. Red wine lasts about 6 days after opening, and white wine lasts about 3.

With proper storage, you could order any amount you have the capacity for. If you’re concerned about this, we recommend making a note of how much wine you tend to use within a month and ordering a similar amount for the following month (with a little extra, just in case). This way, turnover will happen smoothly, and the wine won’t be sitting around long enough to expire.
To store wholesale wine, find a cool, dark place where the bottles can lie safely on their side - this helps to keep the cork moist, so it doesn’t shrink and let oxygen in. Avoid storing wine in areas with fluctuating temperatures, strong odors, or somewhere they would be affected by vibrations - all these things can affect the taste, scent or shelf-life of the wine.
If you often serve wine one glass at a time, but find it expires before the bottle is finished, we recommend buying a wine-by-the-glass dispenser. These puncture the cork with a needle, and use argon gas to prevent the wine from becoming oxygenated while a glass is poured. Some of these also come with aerators to open up the aroma of the wine, leading to more happy customers!
Just make sure to label all your opened wine with the day it was opened, so you can ensure nothing is served past its best.
