Get Ready for Burns Night

Burns night takes place every January 25th, the birthday of Robert Burns, considered to be the national poet of Scotland. The custom is to gather friends and family for a Burns supper – the tradition began shortly after the death of Burns in 1796 with his friends and family meeting annually to honour his life.

Menu Inspiration

Traditionally, the meal features haggis and a glass of Scottish single malt whiskey, however there are numerous other dishes that you could offer on your menu.

For a delicious starter, why not serve up Haddock, Potato & Sweetcorn soup using our MSC Natural Smoked Haddock Fillet and Smoked Streaky Bacon. It’s a great option for those looking to save on time and a Scottish favourite.

Why not go traditional for the main course but add in a twist? Chicken Balmoral Haggis Bon Bons with Whisky Sauce Mayo. This is a great recipe that can be prepared earlier in the day and cooked around time of serving. The star of the dish is the Scottish made Macsween Haggis, rich in flavour. To save on labour, use our mashed potato to serve on the side.

Cranachan is a much-loved dessert that couldn’t be easier for you to prepare. Made up of Medium Oatmeal, Fresh Double Cream, Raspberries and 12 Year Old Malt Whisky. It’s bound to be a crowd pleaser.

Cook with great ingredients

This celebration is a great time to showcase Scottish products in your cooking.

Scotland produces some amazing fish – so why not create some mouth-watering dishes using Scottish Salmon Fillet Suprêmes (on promotion this month) and coat it in a fantastic lemon crumb. Alternatively, use Scottish Smoked Salmon to top off a potato scone and you could even add a Scottish Fresh Medium Egg for extra flavour.

To hold a Burns supper – there are staple ingredients you will need through out many of your dishes. White Ware Potatoes are something you’ll want to have plenty of – whether that’s to make potato cakes or soup. For your stews and soups, it’s great to have Cereal Broth Mix on hand as an excellent base. Of course, you’ll also need Diced Swede - known is ‘Neeps’. It’s a fantastic labour-saving product and great to use as a side to any dish.

We also have a number of products on promotion this month including Macsween Haggis and its vegetarian counter-part. And, to serve along-side or use during cooking in any of your courses, Glenfiddich 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
