6 reasons why compost is great!
International Compost Awareness Week started on the 1st May. This year’s theme is Recipe for Regeneration, focusing on how compost and organics recycling fit together in the process of regeneration.
At Vegware, we make packaging from plants, using renewable, lower carbon, recycled or reclaimed materials. Our packaging is also designed to be commercially compostable with food waste.
Our Environmental team have been forging links with the waste sector since 2012. In that time, we have expanded the composting coverage for our products. Today, you can compost your Vegware across much of the UK, providing high-grade compost for local crops.
In short, we know a thing or two about compost and its benefits.
Let us take you through some of them!
1. Sequesters Carbon
Adding compost to soil increases its health, as it stimulates microbe growth. Compost is an effective way to sequester carbon, this means it pulls and stores carbon in the soil instead of releasing it into the air.
According to Envar, soil stores three times more carbon than the atmosphere and twice the amount of trees and forests.
Put simply, our [Bon Appetit bowls](https://www.brake.co.uk/catering-supplies/food-packaging-disposables/disposables/takeaway-containers/vegware-bon-appetit-noodle-bowl-32oz-909ml/p/128898?term=bon appetit) catch your eye and, when composted, catch carbon.

2. Improves Soil Structure
Compost increases the organic matter in the soil. By adding more organic matter, farmers can increase the maximum yield potential of their fields. It makes fields easier to work and provides better crop establishment.
Composting your Vegware with food waste creates compost that is full of microbes, perfect for enriching the soil.
3. Reduces flood risk
Compost has high organic content. This helps it absorb up to four times its weight in water. It can replace essential organic material in wetlands.
In fact, compost’s ability to absorb water means that it is also effective at reducing runoff and limiting sediment losses.
4. Keeps resources local
Composting keeps resources in your region without relying on export. It turns waste into useful resources, helping businesses join the circular economy and reduce their environmental impact.
5. Creates Jobs
Composting diversifies waste. This creates businesses and job opportunities in the waste sector – especially in rural areas – and nutrient-rich compost for farmers’ fields, helping to grow plants and crops for consumers.
6. Contributes to the circular economy
By choosing to compost your food waste and used Vegware, you contribute to the circular movement of organic recycling, from farm to fork and back again.

Did you know? Compost Research and Education Foundation estimates that landfill and incineration usage can be reduced by a third when organics are recycled.
