Understanding Food Allergies & The Impact On Your Business
What is a food allergy?
Food allergies have become a significant health concern in the UK, with up to 3 million people affected by this condition. Understanding what a food allergy is and how it can impact individuals is essential to promoting safe and inclusive food practices.
A food allergy occurs when the immune system mistakenly identifies certain proteins in a specific food as harmful invaders, leading to an overreaction and triggering various allergic symptoms upon consumption. The symptoms can range from mild reactions like hives and itching to severe and potentially life-threatening reactions known as anaphylaxis.
Almost any food can potentially cause an allergy (either actual or perceived); however, there are currently 14 specific major food allergen groups that are required to be declared on food labels. These allergens must be clearly highlighted in the ingredient list, or through specific precautionary allergen statements on food packaging.
How do food allergies affect my business?
For food retailers, the impact of food allergies cannot be overlooked. The responsibility to cater to customers with food allergies goes beyond just offering allergen-free products; it extends to creating a safe and accommodating environment for these individuals.
A survey published by the Food Standards Agency highlighted the significant impact of food allergies on individuals dining experiences and the lack of confidence in allergen information provided by food businesses. 63% of respondents reported that they have avoided eating out due to their condition; a fear of accidental exposure to allergens can cause anxiety and reluctance to dine out. 47% said they didn’t feel confident that the food businesses provided correct information regarding allergens in the food they serve, creating a lack of confidence. The findings of the survey demonstrate the importance for all food retailers to have a clear and robust allergy management policy that is consistently followed and well communicated to all customers.
