Free range eggs to be relabelled as Barn

18 January 2023

We wanted to let our customers know about an upcoming change to the labelling on free range eggs.

As the biggest outbreak of avian flu on record continues to impact globally, it remains a requirement for free range hens in the UK to be temporarily housed indoors to protect them from the risk infection.

As a result, our customers will start to see some labelling changes on free range eggs from 1 February 2023. Moving forwards, free range eggs will be printed with a number 2 on them, and the product label stickers that are applied to packaging will have the words ‘Barn eggs’ on them.

The Government’s Chief Veterinary Officer has advised that birds will be allowed outside again once it is safe to do so but until that time, eggs will continue to be labelled as barn.

We will continue to monitor the situation and revert to normal labelling once Government vets remove the housing order.
