Leading wholesalers support welsh government to deliver essential food to the vulnerable in isolation
Brakes and Bidfood, the UK’s leading foodservice wholesalers, have begun delivering essential food supplies to Welsh households as part of a new Welsh Government initiative to support the country’s most vulnerable people during the coronavirus crisis.
It is anticipated that the initiative will see the two companies working together to potentially deliver tens of thousands of weekly packages across Wales to people at high risk from the virus who are not able to get easy access to food at this challenging time.
In a joint statement from Hugo Mahoney and Andrew Selley, CEOs of Brakes and Bidfood, the companies confirmed their involvement: “We have a very strong network of depots in Wales and we are delighted to join forces to deliver weekly food and essential supply boxes to extremely vulnerable people in isolation across the country.
“We have worked with the Welsh Government to ensure that we can deliver to even the most remote areas. Our security-checked, professional delivery drivers are hugely motivated and proud to be playing their part in serving their local communities in this fantastic endeavour.”
The government’s directive to temporarily close many foodservice outlets like pubs and restaurants means that both businesses are able to redirect some of their experienced teams to food parcels across the country.
The boxes contain essential food and non-food items such as: UHT long-life milk, cereal, pasta, tinned produce, toilet roll, fruit, vegetables and bread and will be delivered directly to the doorstep.
