Helping you to recycle more, take a fresh look at our milk poly bottles

From February 1st we will change the lids on our Brakes 2.27 litre milk from coloured to clear making it easier for customers to recycle and to add valuable material back into the system to be used again.

Looking after our environment

This is another step in our sustainability efforts and is in line with changes already introduced by some retailers.

This change also supports our role in lessening the country's reliance on virgin plastic. It also means that approx. 32,000 kg of plastic can go back into being recycled again and again.

What’s the difference between coloured and clear?

Swapping the lids to clear plastic makes recycling easier – currently clear plastic needs to be recycled separate to coloured, and so switching to clear lids will reduce colour contamination in the HDPE stream. HDPE stands for High density Polyethylene.

Don't worry, though—the traditional milk colours on the labels will still make our cartons easily recognisable.

Who supplies our milk?

Yew Tree Dairy (West Lancashire)

Based in Skelmersdale, Yew Tree Dairy supplies many Brakes own brand dairy products. Established in 1904, it is one of the UK’s largest family-owned and operated milk processing companies. It has gained a deserved reputation for producing a range of high-quality dairy and ensuring that farmers are paid fairly for their product.

All the UK farms that supply milk to Yew Tree Dairy are also Red Tractor Farm-Assured. This means we get milk from the healthiest and happiest cows, enjoying as much free pasture as practical.
