How to Build a Stand Out Cheese Board

The perfect end to any evening meal is a cheese board. Full of different flavours, textures, and colours, it’s the perfect dish to have fun with. We’ve put together our top tips on building a board that makes your customers go wow.

1. Picking the Perfect Cheeses

There are no rules on what cheeses to use as part of your board, but as the star of the show – you will want to have a variety from hard and soft to aged and new.

Start off your board with British classics including a smooth and creamy Taw Valley Mature Cheddar Cheese 77912, this favourite can pair with almost anything. Crumbly in texture and piquant in taste, our Brakes Whole Baby Blue Stilton® 71509 will stand out on any board. If you’re looking for a great time and labour-saving option, why not use Butlers Perfect British Cheeseboard 134002?

Introduce some amazing flavours. Our Mini Fresh Goat Cheese Log 117855 is seasoned with garlic and herbs and is a fantastic soft cheese option. Add a slice of creamy goodness to your board with Paysan Breton Le Brie au lait pasteurise 71004, the edible rind leaves additional flavour. Dusted with smoky paprika, the Applewood Smoke Flavoured Cheddar Cheese 74075 is bound to be a favourite.

2. Adding Crunch

Crackers and Crispbreads are an important accompaniment, they are the perfect host to your cheese choices. We also have some other ways to add that crunch…

For your more traditional option, we suggest using Millers Catering Selection Biscuits 127716, these ultra-thin crackers are excellent carriers for all cheese types. Another fantastic addition are Walkers Highland Oatcakes 3097, rough in texture and incredibly moreish, it partners perfectly with Blue Stilton.

If you’re looking to go the extra mile with your board, try out the delicious Artisan Biscuits Miller's Toast Cranberry & Raisin 127715, a sweeter option to set off your Cheddar Cheese. Crispbreads are a great premium choice and Peter's Yard Sourdough Crispbread 127714 have the perfect crunch!

Using a range of nuts doesn’t only look great for decoration but they also complement some of your options. Brakes Walnut Halves 100256 earthy tones pair well with smooth Goats Cheese while Brakes Pecan Nut Halves 8796 are a great combination with Brie. Why not sprinkle with sugar water and bake for 10 mins to give them a light caramel taste, served warm there irresistible!

3. Sweetness is Key

With all the salty flavours, having sweet options to finish off your board balances it out. Besides, would it be a cheese board without a chutney?

Pre-made preserves are a great labour-saving tool, Brakes Chilli Jam 126918 is a sweet and sticky option with a gentle kick, while Brakes Caramelised Red Onion Chutney 86274 is an incomparable choice with its tangy and traditional taste.

Our top tip is to add lots of colourful fruit and Red / Black Seedless Grapes 10301 are perfect to top a gooey slice of brie. Figs 10386 and their honey like flavour are great with crumbly stilton or, for a labour-saving solution, why not use our Brakes Sticky Fig Relish 121618?
