Brakes wins 2018 National Recycling Award for Waste Reduction

Brakes has won a coveted 2018 MRW National Recycling Award for Waste Reduction.

The results of the National Recycling Awards were revealed on 28th June at the esteemed London Hilton on Park Lane, where over 602 of the Recycling elite came together for a night of recognition and celebration of the sector’s achievements.

Winning the Commercial Waste Reduction Initiative award, the Brakes ‘2 Zero 20’ pledge was praised by the National Recycling Awards expert judging panel.

The '2 Zero 20' pledge is not about individual business, it is about the industry working together for a more sustainable future and we hope that our example will encourage other foodservice wholesalers. Hugo Mahoney, CEO

The MRW National Recycling Awards 2018 aims to recognise and celebrate best practice and innovation in recycling and waste management. And with our continued focus on plastic reduction, this award is recognition of the importance of reducing the use of non-recyclable black and single use plastics across the Brakes network. This includes eliminating the use of such plastics from all own brand products by the end of 2020.

Brakes’ CEO, Hugo Mahoney, said: “We recognise that the foodservice industry needs to be more proactive in being responsible users of plastic. The ‘2 Zero 20’ pledge takes an evidence-based approach to the use of plastics and part of our commitment is to launch an education campaign to help our customers become more plastic responsible. While we know that problematic, non-recyclable plastic needs to be removed, in some cases, plastic may be the most environmentally-friendly packaging material to use.

“This is not about individual business, it is about the industry working together for a more sustainable future and we hope that our example will encourage other foodservice wholesalers, large and small, to take a similarly proactive stance to addressing this issue.”

Andrea Lockerbie, Associate Editor of MRW said: “This year’s winners showcase the innovation and creative thinking being applied by those who are leading the way in the field of resource and waste management. There is a lot that others can learn from them.”
